A palace wedding is a particular kind of dream: marble courtyards, lakes at dusk, a family’s history in every corridor. India has more of these settings than almost anywhere, and a handful of palace hotels have become the names couples return to. Here are five worth knowing, followed by the questions that matter more than the view.
01
Taj Lake Palace
Udaipur, Rajasthan · On Lake PicholaSet on an island in Lake Pichola, this white marble palace was once a summer palace of the rulers of Mewar. Its position on the water makes it a natural fit for small, intimate weddings, with the city and the Aravalli hills as a backdrop.
Why it earns its placeThe setting does most of the work, so the planning can stay simple.
02
The Oberoi Udaivilas
Udaipur, Rajasthan · On the banks of Lake PicholaA palace-style hotel on the shore of Lake Pichola, long associated with large, richly decorated celebrations. Courtyards, domes and lakeside lawns give a planner many different spaces to use across several days of events.
Why it earns its placeA good fit when the celebration is long and the guest list is large.
03
Umaid Bhawan Palace
Jodhpur, Rajasthan · Art deco palacePart of the former royal residence of Jodhpur, this is among the largest private homes in the world, and it overlooks the old Blue City. Its art deco architecture sets it apart from the more traditional Rajasthani palaces, and it has hosted weddings that drew wide attention.
Why it earns its placeA distinctive style for couples who want something other than the usual Rajput look.
04
Rambagh Palace
Jaipur, Rajasthan · Former royal residenceOnce the home of Jaipur’s royal family, Rambagh Palace was among the first palaces in India to become a heritage hotel. Its gardens, verandahs and marble corridors suit both daytime ceremonies and evening receptions.
Why it earns its placeGenerous gardens give you room to host a large wedding without crowding it.
05
Taj Falaknuma Palace
Hyderabad, Telangana · Historic palace hotelA grand historic palace in Hyderabad, set above the city. It offers a different cultural setting from Rajasthan, which suits couples who want a wedding with Hyderabadi heritage and cuisine.
Why it earns its placeA strong choice if you want a palace wedding outside Rajasthan.
Questions to ask before you book
Beauty is the easy part. Before you commit, ask each hotel these questions, and get the answers in writing.
Exclusive use or shared? Will you have the property to yourselves, or will other guests be there? Capacity: how many guests fit comfortably for each event, indoors and outdoors? Vendors: can you bring your own caterer, decorator and photographer, or must you use theirs? Music and timings: what are the rules on sound, fireworks, processions and horses? Weather: what is the plan for rain or heat? Transfers: if guests arrive by boat or over several sites, how will that work? What is included: rooms, taxes, service charges and cancellation terms.
When to go and how early to book
The cooler months, roughly October to March, are the most popular and the most expensive, and the best dates at palace hotels are often reserved a year or more ahead. If your dates are flexible, ask about shoulder-season dates, which can be easier to secure.
Our advice
Choose the setting that matches the wedding you want, not the one with the biggest name. Visit if you can, ask your planner what they have seen go wrong at each place, and keep your contract simple and clear.
