Cookies

Last updated: October 2026

Cookies are small files that a website stores on your device. We use as few as we can. Apart from the ones the site needs to work, they only run if you say yes. Choose below, and change your mind whenever you like.

What each type does

Essential

These keep the site working and remember your cookie choices. They are always on and do not track you.

Analytics

These help us understand which stories are read, how readers find us, what devices they use and how pages are used, including anonymised recordings and heatmaps of scrolling and tapping. We use this only to improve the site, and not to identify you.

Advertising

Some pages carry advertising. Adverts we place ourselves are plain images and do not set cookies. If we ever work with an advertising network, its cookies will only be used if you allow Advertising, and a switch will appear above.

How long they last

Your choice is remembered in your browser for up to a year, or until you change it or clear your browser data. Analytics cookies last from a day to about two years, depending on the tool.

Changing your choice

Use the switches above at any time, or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you turn Analytics off, we remove the analytics cookies we can reach and stop the tools from running.

Who provides these tools

Analytics on The Lookout is provided by Google (Google Analytics) and Microsoft (Clarity). When you allow Analytics, they may receive information such as your device, browser, approximate location and the pages you visit, and they handle it under their own privacy policies.

More about how we handle your information is in our Privacy Policy.
