Five Pieces to Build a Wardrobe Around
Buy fewer things, buy them better, and have them fitted.

A good wardrobe is not a big one. It is a small set of well-made pieces that work together, so you always know what to wear. These five are a sound place to start.
1. A jacket in navy
A soft, unlined or lightly structured navy jacket goes with almost everything, from trousers to jeans, and suits both work and weddings. Choose natural fabrics such as wool or cotton blends that breathe in warmer weather.
2. Two good shirts
A white shirt and a light blue shirt in a quality cotton cover most situations. Look for collars that hold their shape, and buttons that feel solid.
3. Dark trousers that fit
One pair in charcoal or navy, cut to sit well at the waist and break cleanly at the shoe. Fit matters more than the label, so have them hemmed.

4. One pair of leather shoes
A simple leather shoe in brown or black, kept polished and resoled when needed, lasts for years. Cedar shoe trees and a day’s rest between wears extend their life.
5. A good piece of knitwear, and one kurta
A fine merino or cotton knit adds warmth and polish over a shirt. For festive occasions, add one well-cut kurta in a plain colour, and you are ready for most celebrations.
Find a tailor
A tailor can turn an ordinary piece into one that looks made for you. Sleeves, hems and waists are usually quick, inexpensive changes.
Our advice
Buy slowly, choose quality over quantity and keep things in good repair. A small wardrobe you love will serve you better than a full one you do not.
