We have not tested the products in this guide, and no brand paid for or supplied anything in it. This is a guide to the houses, not a review.

A good lipstick collection is built slowly. You don’t need many, just a few you reach for again and again. Knowing the houses behind them helps you choose with confidence. Here are five worth knowing, each with something that sets it apart.

How to use this guide

Think of it as a map, not a ranking. Each house has a different strength, and the right one depends on your taste, your skin and your budget. Before you buy anything, read our calm checklist on how to buy a lipstick well.

01

Guerlain

France · Perfumer and lipstick pioneer

Guerlain is credited with creating the first lipstick in stick form in the 19th century, a refillable design that changed how lipstick was carried and applied. Today the house is known for its lipstick collections, including Rouge G, which pairs colour with a collectible case.

Why it earns its placeIt’s the house that started the modern lipstick, which makes it a natural place to begin learning.

02

Dior

France · Rouge Dior since 1953

Christian Dior launched the first Rouge Dior in 1953 to complete his runway collections, and the line has grown to well over a thousand shades. The house is known for its refillable lipsticks, which let you replace the colour and keep the case.

Why it earns its placeIts long history and refillable cases suit a collector who likes to keep things.

03

Chanel

France · Rouge Allure and beyond

Chanel’s lipsticks are known for their packaging and their range of finishes. Rouge Allure, introduced in 2006, has become one of the house’s signature lipsticks. Coco Chanel herself was a champion of wearing lipstick.

Why it earns its placeA good reference for anyone who cares about design as much as colour.

04

Yves Saint Laurent Beauté

France · Couture colour

YSL Beauté brings the fashion house’s sense of colour to lips. Its range includes the Rouge Volupté Shine, a favourite among many beauty writers, and it offers a wide choice of bold and classic shades.

Why it earns its placeA strong choice if you like fashion-led colour and a wide shade range.

05

MAC

Canada · Founded in 1984

MAC began in Toronto in 1984, created by makeup artist Frank Toskan and salon owner Frank Angelo for professionals who needed colour that held up under studio lights. Its matte reds, including Ruby Woo and Russian Red, became classics. It is usually easier to find and gentler on the budget than the Paris houses.

Why it earns its placeA friendly entry point for a first or second lipstick.

Building your collection

Start with one classic red, one soft everyday shade and one that you simply love the look of. Try shades in daylight before you commit, since colour changes with light. Buy from the brand or an authorised retailer, because counterfeits exist, and check the batch code and shelf-life symbol on the box. Keep each lipstick clean, and replace it if it changes smell or texture.

Our advice

Don’t chase the whole list. Pick the house whose story you like, begin with one colour, and let the collection grow with you. A small, well-chosen set will serve you better than a drawer full of unused sticks.

Shades, formulas and availability change, and we have not tested these products. Please check with the brand or an authorised retailer before you buy. Details checked October 2026.
