Five Quiet Habits for Better Sleep

Good sleep is the foundation of everything else: mood, focus, energy and health. Most adults do best with seven or more hours a night. The habits that help are simple, and they work by being repeated.

1. Keep a steady schedule

Go to bed and wake up at about the same times every day, including weekends. A regular rhythm teaches your body when to feel sleepy.

2. Get light in the morning

Daylight soon after waking helps set your body clock. Step outside for ten minutes, or sit by a window, before you reach for your phone.

3. Be careful with caffeine and late meals

Caffeine can stay in your system for hours, so have your last cup earlier in the day. Heavy meals and alcohol close to bedtime tend to disturb sleep.

4. Wind down for an hour

Dim the lights, put screens away and do something calm: read, stretch gently, listen to quiet music or write down tomorrow’s tasks so they stop circling in your head.

5. Make the room restful

Keep the bedroom cool, dark and quiet. If you cannot sleep after about twenty minutes, get up, do something gentle in low light and return when you feel sleepy. Lying awake and watching the clock makes it worse.

Our advice

Change one thing at a time and give it a couple of weeks. If you often struggle to sleep, snore loudly or feel exhausted in the day, speak to a doctor.
